Vermeij’s first scientific love was for seashells. That led him marine biology to paleontology and, eventually, to the profession of geology, the discipline that, through Lyell’s influence on Darwin, midwifed evolution and remains critical to demonstrating that evolution is the correct mode of thinking about the development of life. In each of 13 chapters, Vermeij takes an aspect of the theory of evolution through adaptation and discusses how the physical evidence ascertained by science verifies the theory. Of course, this involves a lot of particulars about different creatures in different circumstances, all of which his congenial instructive tone and clear exposition make an absorbing joy to read. In each chapter, he also states how the aspect of adaptation at hand can be seen in human development, from the phenotype to civilization. He says his aim is to convince us that no supernatural agency is necessary to the development of life. But he’s no philosopher and misses that mark completely. A Three Mile Island in Colorado?

Probably nothing that Hollywood – or lethal.

Well, maybe not.

The infamous accident took place March 28, 1979, a partial core meltdown in a unit of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania. Three Mile Island crystallized anti-nuclear safety concerns and resulted in new regulations for the nuclear industry. According to Dr. Douglas M. Brugge, the nuclear release at Three Mile Island may explain why there is "public and policy interest in the high-technology, highly visible end of the nuclear cycle."

At the same time, he continues: "The environmental and health consequences of the early steps in the cycle – mining, milling, and processing of uranium ore – may be less appreciated."

Which is why the Advocacy Coalition of Telluride, in partnership with the Town of Telluride, the Pinhead Institute and the Telluride School District have invited Dr. Brugge to town. Dr. Brugge is one of the world's experts on the toxicity and health effects of uranium exposure from mining, milling, and processing," those "early steps."

Dr. Brugge is speaking Monday, December 6, 6:00 p.m. at The Palm. His topic: "Dirty Secrets: The Health Effects of Uranium Mining, New Research Findings." Earlier that same day, the professor is talking with local and regional science students.

A Biography of Cancer...may not sound like a book that you would want to read. But in the tradition of great medical history books like "Microbe Hunters," this review is both illuminating and inspiring. When I started the book I thought I had little knowledge of the subject. I suppose this is just another version of denial, because from the early days of chemotherapy to the advent of Gleevec ten years ago, nearly every chapter in the book brought back memories of cancer research, cancer promise and cancer failure over the past 4 decades. Reading the book was not so much a revelation as a consolidation.

The author is a young oncologist practising and teaching in New York City. He undertook the writing of this book after finishing his residency. Understanding the often disconnected worlds of research and clinical practice is central to putting the history of cancer in perspective. Mukherjee tells his story through patient histories, breakthrough journal articles and Nobel acceptance speeches. At all times his explanations are put forth in plain English with a minimum of jargon. Andy.

*Starred Review* With so much that can be said and said positively about this magisterial biography, it is difficult not to write a review as long as the book itself. Given the distinction of the author, who wrote, among other single and collective biographies, the glowingly reviewed Alexander Hamilton (2004), readers can safely assume from the outset that what lies ahead of them is a vastly enlightening, overwhelmingly engaging treatment of a great man. The subject of the book needs only, by way of identification, the one word that Chernow uses as his title: Washington. Another book on Washington? is a question rendered pointless by this one, which happens to be the author's masterpiece. Definitive Washington is the point and effect of this biography. Our first president is thought of as more marble statue than living, hurting, loving human; however, Chernow's Washington stands not in the opposite corner as hot-blooded and animated. Washington spent a lifetime practicing control of his passions and emotions; his innate virtues, undenied and even celebrated here, were sharpened and focused by the man's suppression of a natural volatility. *Starred Review* Hitchens, who, in his earlier books, has expressed contempt for both God and Mother Teresa (although not in that order), is often described as a contrarian. In fact, in his book Letters to a Young Contrarian (2001), he himself noted that he can appear insufferable and annoying, albeit without intending to. This memoir, bracing, droll, and very revealing, gives him yet another description: storyteller. He writes with a voice you can hear clearly, warmed by smoke and whiskey, and draws readers into his story, which proves as personal as it is political. As with many memoirs, it is not the public moments that are so fascinating, though there are plenty of those. Hitchens takes readers with him to Havana and Prague, Afghanistan and Iraq; tests himself by being waterboarded (he was disappointed in his early capitulation); and hobnobs with politicians and poets. He almost gets himself beaten up by defacing a poster in Iraq with a Hitler mustache. But the most intriguing stories are the personal ones, both from his early days, at home and at boarding school, and from his later life, when he learns that his mother was Jewish, which, if only technically, makes him Jewish as well. This revelation leads Hitchens on a quest to learn the story of his family, many of whom died in the Holocaust. How this new identity squares with his oft-proclaimed atheism sheds a different light on the meaning of religious identity. (He struggles mightily with his political identity as well.) Few authors can rile as easily as Hitchens does, but even his detractors might find it difficult to put down a book so witty, so piercing, so spoiling for a fight. time warp

Solid story telling of the old fashioned kind, with plot, setting, heroes and conclusion. These stories were written between 1950 and 1968 are something of a time capsule of that fascinating era. When I first read them as a teenager in the mid 70's they were becoming cult classics. It is remarkable now to observe how dated and innocent they seem today.

I see a much greater continuity looking back on these stories with Clarke and Heinlein than I did at the time. Vonnegut majored in chemistry at Cornell University before joining the U.S. Army and serving in Europe. His heroes all manifest the 'can-do' mindset that so characterized America at mid-century.

Although his subject matter may have been controversial at the time, all of Vonnegut's stories are fundamentally hopeful, as if all the world needs is a bit of clear thinking to get straightened out. Oddly enough, for me that story that didn't work is the title piece, "Welcome to the Monkey House." Its use of non-metaphoric rape as an avenue of political and spiritual liberation has always been disturbing -- at least it was for a lot of us who read the book in the 70's, and may explain why this author is considered a guy's writer.

By and large though, I found his work has aged quite well, and I was left almost a bit nostalgic for this earlier and more innocent time. Andy

I got a lot of chuckles out of this one...the author creates a large ensemble cast and follows them from the early eighties through today and into a not too distant future. Her focus is on the punk rock world of the lower east side and alphabet city.

"Time is a goon", and Egan is merciless in dissecting the ravages of age on a generation of rockers set on early demise. The day after I finished reading this I found the obituary for Ari Up, lead singer for the Slits, who died last week at the age of 48.

Like the old movie "Pulp Fiction," the chronology of the story is totally chopped up and rearranged. However, it spans decades rather than days, and one entire chapter of the story is carried completely through PowerPoint slides.

Plenty of fiction leaves me bored stiff, this did not. I am currently reading (listening actually) to an earlier work by the same author, "The Keep." I recommend this as well -- like "Goon Squad" it combines fantastic inner dialogue with other worldy humor. Andy

Historian Wyman offers a richly detailed study of the thousands of workers who followed the booming railroads west during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in order to pick, prepare, and load crops, from cotton, wheat, and hops to apples, beets, and oranges. These transients moved about the country, often accompanied by their families, who worked as well. They endured generally low wages, backbreaking labor, and awful living conditions-mitigated only slightly in the 1910s, for the select few who could afford automobiles and were thus granted greater mobility. Periodic efforts to unionize, especially by the radical Industrial Workers of the World, were invariably met with hostility. Wyman's extensive research translates into readable, often moving prose with details that illuminate the lives of previously obscure people and reveals a surprising ethnic and racial diversity among this often-overlooked group. Set in Russia's Maritime Territory, Vaillant's story concerns a tiger of the endangered Amur subspecies that killed three hunters in 1997. Expanding from the incidents' central facts, Vaillant's narrative explores humans' relationship with predatory animals in general, with the Amur tiger as the specific example. Literary, folkloric, and scientific sources combine into a deeply sensitive depiction of the tiger's adaptation to its forested, mountainous, and wintry environment. As he recounts how Russians such as the hunters in question also attempt to extract a living from the taiga, possibly including illegal poaching of the tiger, Vaillant posits the tiger's thoughts about the competition, inferring its intelligence from a conservation warden's investigation into the cases of the unfortunate hunters, who were felled in ambush-style attacks. In the winter of 1997, a huge tiger is stalking-and devouring-hunters on the edge of an isolated Siberian village. Yuri Trush and his team of tiger inspectors are called to the scene to investigate one incident, and ultimately, to determine the tiger's fate. Nature writer Vaillant (The Golden Spruce) follows Trush's team as they track the tiger on foot through dense forest in the bitter cold while documenting the effects of the tiger crisis on the desperately troubled village. What spirits this adventure narrative from compelling to brilliant is Vaillant's use of the tiger hunt as an allegorical lens through which to understand the cultural, economic, and environmental devastation of post-Communist Russia. Vaillant suggests that the lone tiger's desperate acts are merely symptomatic of the larger crisis facing wild tiger populations-and their human counterparts-in contemporary Russia. VERDICT This energetic hybrid of classic adventure and impassioned sociocultural critique will appeal to Jon Krakauer fans, tiger lovers, and readers interested in contemporary Russian history. It might also attract fans of the film The Ghost and the Darkness, based on J.H. Patterson's The Man-Eaters of Tsavo.
