I was going to recommend this book of short stories even before I got to 'Or else', which is a story about a compulsive liar who takes a new girlfriend to his family's house in Telluride. This is a good story, but I'm mainly recommending it because it's cool to see Telluride from the writer's descriptions. The characters go to bars and restaurants and you can mostly guess where they are, and the description of the drive from Arizona is pretty accurate. So that's how the outside world sees us!

I had the hilarious experience of talking to the editor of the New Yorker before "Or Else" appeared in the magazine. He called to fact check the story (I guess that if you use an actual place, you need to have your facts straight). He asked about 30 questions like, would it be possible to live in a broken-down shack of a house and still have a great view? Is there an old bank building with prominent steps that now houses a sunglasses shop? Would it be realistic for a motorcycle gang to attend the 4th of July parade? It was one of my favorite librarian moments here in Telluride. Nelson had a piece in the latest issue of "Shelter Magazine" as well.
